As we provide workshops with campus administrators on attendance, we get some of the same questions. TxSP has a section on Attendance and one on Truancy. To clarify how they all work together, we have developed and posted a new side-by-side chart.

  • Clock 1 deals with Truancy. Truancy counts unexcused absences, full days, or parts of days. Triggers: 3 in a rolling 4 weeks (notice + truancy prevention measures) and 10 in a rolling 6 months, same school year (court referral within 10 school days).
  • Clock 2 highlights credit for retention (per the below-90% and below-75% attendance rules). Clock 2 counts every absence from each class, excused or unexcused (except a physician-certified serious or life-threatening illness). Below 90% = credit only through a principal-approved plan; below 75% = attendance committee.
  • Clock 3 discusses chronic absences (more than 10% of instructional days with enrollment over 30 days). Clock 3 counts unexcused absences and locally excused absences that are not funding-eligible. The student becomes at risk and must receive accelerated instruction.

Why This Matters for Your Campus

The impact of regular absences is costly. It shows up in reading scores, course failures, credit loss, discipline referrals, loss of dollars, and graduation rates. A student who misses just two days a month has missed nearly 10% of the school year. Tracking absences is only the first step. Attendance improves when campus leaders build systems that catch problems early, match support to the cause, and follow through on accountability. This interactive workshop helps principals and assistant principals lead that work.

Three Clocks, One Campus System

As an administrator, you oversee three attendance measures that run at the same time: truancy, attendance for credit, and chronic absences. The workshop shows how tardies, early check-outs, and full-day absences count toward each clock. You’ll leave knowing which clock is running, what action is due, and who on your staff owns each step.

Learn by Doing

This is not a sit-and-listen session. Administrators work through real campus decisions through document hunts, school-level scenarios, and data review.

Proactive Leadership Steps

Administrators explore how to lead a tiered attendance system with campus-wide prevention, early intervention, and intensive support.

Accountability That Holds Up

Administrators carry final responsibility for attendance decisions. The workshop walks through how to hold students and families accountable fairly, consistently, and defensibly. Every administrator leaves with two ready-to-use tools:

  1. A campus attendance action plan with priorities, strategies, staff owners, and dates. It’s ready to align with your campus improvement plan.

  2. Individual student plans for students who need targeted support right away

Cost

$2000 for a full-day training and $1000 for 1/2 day, led by TxSP CEO Debby Moore.
